Hemmingway: Catherine as a Code Hero

Catherine: A Manipulative Caretaker In A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry is portrayed at first by a kind of separation from life-however all around trained and cordial, he feels as though he has nothing to do with the war. These sentiments of separation are driven away when Henry becomes hopelessly enamored with Catherine and starts to understand the threatening idea of the world. Along these lines, Henry serves the capacity of a character that becomes started in Hemingway's way of thinking of an apathetic universe and man's battle against it. Because of the inauspicious passing of a life partner past to the occasions of this book, Catherine is started into Hemingway's way of thinking, and embodies the characteristics of the Hemingwayâ code heroâ throughout the novel. She is portrayed essentially by her dismissal forâ social conventionsâ as well as an unwavering commitment to Henry. Catherine is characterized as a code legend as a result of her respect, fearlessness, and continuance in torment. Respect is characterized as having a sharp feeling of moral direct. For Catherine, the moral lead is keeping Henry glad, and in doing as such, she is keeping herself cheerful. From the start, Catherine Barkley gives off an impression of being a case of any man’s dream young lady. She shows up as a dull character that solicits nothing from Henry and is just there to satisfy him. Along these lines, it is said that Catherine's character is belittling to ladies. Catherine Barkley's fundamental way to deal with her relationship with Frederic shows her as being substandard. She appears to happily acknowledge a lower job in her relationship with Frederic. â€Å"I'll do what you need and state what you want,† she lets him know, â€Å"and then I'll be an incredible achievement, won't I† (Hemmingway105). Her concept of a fruitful relationship, and of satisfaction, depends on making Frederic upbeat regardless of what she needs to do. Like the code legend, she handles clashing necessities with beauty, providing for both, yet shorting none. She utilizes Henry as a format to satisfy her requirement for her dead life partner. Also, on the grounds that Henry is described as dispassionate, it is easy for her to utilize him as a layout to form him into the man she yearns for. She enters the war as an attendant a similar time her life partner enters as an officer, but since he bites the dust she yearns for a hold to monitor reality. She is constantly encircled by injured warriors, which doesn't assist her with adapting to the passing of her life partner until Henry comes into her life. His dispassionate demeanor towards the world furnishes her with the ideal open door take her life partner back to lifeâ€in her psyche. In a discussion with Henry, Catherine powers words into his mouth, â€Å"Say, ‘I’ve return to Catherine in the night’† (30). Henry instinctually rehashes as she says while never scrutinizing her. He even says, â€Å"I thought she was presumably a little crazy†¦I couldn't have cared less what I was getting into† (30). Despite the fact that he recognizes the way that she may be somewhat unhinged, he acknowledges her since he the kind of man to bet. In another case, Catherine consoles herself that her adoration won't desert her once more. â€Å"You’re so beautiful and sweet. You wouldn’t leave in the night, okay? † (197). Since she loses her affection once as of now, she is reluctant to permit that to happen once more. Likewise, by adoring Henry, she spares her from going insane with sadness. When everything is detonating surrounding them, everything takes on more earnestness. In her brain, just as his, it is ordinary that she feels so strongly for Henry. What's more, she doesn’t self-destruct without him when they are isolated, yet just fights the good fight and trusting. She doesn't need Henry for anything besides love. Despite the fact that, by all accounts, Catherine is by all accounts the ideal male dream, she is in truth an incredible inverse. Notwithstanding her fair demonstrations, she shows mental fortitude. Indeed, even Ernest Lockridge, creator of â€Å"Faithful in Her Fashion: Catherine Barkley, the Invisible Hemingway Heroine† says, â€Å"Catherine much of the time shows mind, knowledge, cool incongruity, and, confronting demise, she shows nobility and courageâ€qualities that appears to be conflicting to the groveling, agreeable Catherine† (Lockridge 172). Hemmingway depicts mental fortitude in Catherine when she attempts to reassure Henry about her demise. â€Å"I’m not bold any longer, sweetheart. I’m all wrecked. They’ve broken me. I know it now† (Hemmingway 323). Catherine is obviously in dread of death, yet she isn't attempting to run or escape it. She faces demise and attempts to reassure Henry by revealing to him she won't pass on. Subsequent to experiencing a caesarian area and bringing forth a stillborn child kid, Catherine demonstrates exactly how fearless she is. Despite the fact that she realizes she is kicking the bucket, she despite everything has the nobility and solidarity to acknowledge such a destiny. In face, she winds up attempting to comfort her troubled darling by and by. With death drawing nearer, Catherine’s last words to Frederic Henry recommend she has some sense or comprehension of her own mortality and of what is soon to come. She says, â€Å"I’m not somewhat apprehensive. It’s only a filthy trick† (331). The â€Å"it† Catherine alludes to is probably demise, yet truth be told, the uncertain might be alluding to life, a procedure Catherine sees as a â€Å"rotten game† (31), since such a great amount about it is left to possibility and passing is consistently the end. Catherine stood bold even with a fight with her own body. Like the warriors, neither her dauntlessness, nor Henry’s love, could spare her from death. In Henry’s mind, the passing of the fighters and the demise of Catherine are equal disasters, which can't be isolated from one another. By weaving the disasters together, he memorializes both such catastrophes, and can maybe plan to mend a touch of his torment. Pundits may contend that Catherine is a grip for Henry to adapt to war, yet obviously all through the novel, Henry is more connected to her than she is to him. Frederic says, â€Å"When I saw her, I was infatuated with her. Everything turned over within me† (Hemmingway 91). He is genuinely going gaga for her and what her identity is, however she, then again just loves him for being alive. He is, actually, her apparatus to persevere through the passionate agony for the loss of her life partner. Indeed Ernest Lockridge says, â€Å"To protect her dream, Catherine endeavors to disengage the relationship from others. She speaks Frederic Henry’s name just once†¦by stressing that individuals will speculate an affair†¦she won't wed Frederic Henry† (Lockridge 174). When Frederic initially meets her she regrets that she didn't wed her life partner before he passed on. She says that they were locked in for a long time and that they grew up together. She discloses to Frederic she didn't wed her life partner since she believed that it would trap him. She believes she will do likewise to Henry. Frederic Henry wants to be hitched however Catherine figures this would shield them from being together during the war. At the point when he pressures her, she says, â€Å"We’re truly wedded. I couldn’t be any progressively hitched. † She keeps up this demeanor until close to the finish of her pregnancy, when she says, â€Å"I assume in the event that we have this kid, we should get married† (Hemmingway 115). Frederic says, â€Å"Let’s get hitched now† (293). In any case, Catherine rejects again and cases to need to hold up until after the child is conceived. She needs the dedication of marriage, however is dubious of it as a foundation. Additionally, Catherine, in her psyche, imagines Henry as her dead life partner, so to her she is still totally steadfast however as a general rule, she is with a man that she has not really come to know. She is at a delicate state where on the off chance that she recognizes the passing of her life partner, she will be broken. Her system of adapting to the agony of losing a friend or family member is by supplanting him with another body however not in soul. On a physical sense, she suffers torment by being ceaselessly from Henry just as the event where she is in the process of giving birth. While in labor, Catherine is in torment, however she is advising Henry to eat so he isn't hurt from hunger. She says, â€Å"That was a major one. Don’t you stress, dear. You leave. Go have another breakfast† (317). Indeed, even with agonizing compressions, she is more worried about Henry’s hunger than her own solace. Catherine has a high continuance for torment, both genuinely and truly. She makes methods for dealing with stress for both so she can live actually without appearing to be crazy. Customarily, Hemingway's legends are male, and to decipher Catherine as a code saint was prohibited. Catherine was thought as a lacking character in the novel, only a glorified projection of male want. Upon closer assessment, be that as it may, Catherine shares attributes of the code legend. Hemingway's code legend is a talented expert. Catherine is a medical attendant who is talented in her calling. The code legend lives with fortitude in a perilous world. Catherine shows mental fortitude when she and Frederic push over the lake to escape into Switzerland, a risky accomplishment, and particularly when she attempts to convey their infant, at long last understanding that she will bite the dust. The code saint additionally lives in an arbitrary universe, yet decides to control himself and suffer reality. Catherine can't control occasions when she starts giving birth, yet she perseveres through the torment with respect until her demise. Catherine suffers in different manners, too. She encounters the demise of a life partner and faces extraordinary dread as an unmarried medical caretaker when she learns she is pregnant. All through these occasions, be that as it may, Catherine doesn't feel frustrated about herself, and she doesn't break. Like a code saint, she perseveres. Works Cited Hemingway, Ernest. How are these roles further complicated for women of color in the United States? Airline Industry Problems and Suggested Solutions Essay

Airline Industry Problems and Suggested Solutions The airline industry has over the past few months gradually been going into recession. This has been due to a number of factors, all affecting the industry in a negative manner at the same time. This has resulted in low profits and poor performance. The decline in the industry sharply increased after the terrorist attacks on the United States, increasing the urgency to clearly identify the causes of the problems faced and to find any solutions available to overcome them. One of the factors contributing to the poor performance has been the global economic slowdown whose effect has not been limited to the airline industry but has extended to many other industries. The effect of this†¦show more content†¦But after the demand for military pilots declined, there were cutbacks. Pilot training is now no longer subsidized, forcing pilots to pay for their training. This has a high cost of approximately $70 000. Action must be taken to solve these problems to prevent more damage to the airline industry. The first step that companies should take is to try and deal with the losses they are making by reducing their costs as much as possible. There are various methods of doing achieving this. Job cuts could be made. This would reduce the cost of wages paid by the companies. However this may be met with opposition from employees. They may take industrial action to help and show support for their fellow employees that have been made redundant. Morale may also come down, as employees no longer feel that their jobs are secure. Companies could try to cutback on the number of planes used. This would reduce the cost of fuel and maintenance. The companies could also raise money through the sale of these unused plane and other assets. But this would mean that some routes would have to be cancelled so the airline would risk losing customers who use that particular route to competitors. Another option available would be for companies to adopt a policy of no hiring. This is when no new employees are hired. This would not reduce any costs but would prevent the addition of any further costs. Last Place Medal, First Place Experience free essay sample

To my knowledge, competition is reared early in children. Although competition can be healthy as it spurs innovation and provides motivation for people to better themselves, it can also produce narrow minded adults. Through competition in academics, sports, tournaments, and club activities, young minds are taught that in order to have fun one must be in first. With this idea of first place being reinforced within our youth, it can lead them to become obsessed with victory. They eventually lose sight of the fun things that come with the process or activities and only find enjoyment when holding the gold. This obsession leads people to adopt sayings like â€Å"Second place just means you’re the first loser† or â€Å"Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.† When a person’s life becomes nothing more than a lust for first place, they begin to lose track of what truly matters. When I graduated high school, I was tied for rank 15 with two other students. We will write a custom essay sample on Last Place Medal, First Place Experience or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I started out school in Arizona without a GPA worth mentioning. Since I was a transfer student from New York, I was not placed in any advance classes. However, as I proceeded through high school, I began to take more and more advance courses each year. I didn’t take these courses to boost my GPA; I mostly took them because I enjoyed learning. I genuinely had a fun time in the classes where my peers wanted to learn as much as I did. Classes that had teachers who were able to provide a unique atmosphere for honor students. Although they shared my love for learning, they took grades and GPA to an unhealthy level. There’s a saying that goes â€Å"It’s lonely at the top.† I would extend this saying to say that it’s lonely when all you dream about is the top. Back in high school, almost every single one of my classes was an AP or honors course. Most of my school friends had all the same classes as me since the school didn’t provide a large variety of advanced courses. This led to a group of 20 or so students who were extremely competitive with each other academically. This constant war for rank 1 made all my classes less and less fun since the top students turned everything into a battle. Small debates, simple projects, board work, it all became an outlet for their need to be number one. Before becoming an honor student, I used to love going to school and learning new things, but the malice and tension that stung the air in all of my classes made it almost unbearable. This alludes back to my first few statements because those top students did not have fun doin g what they were doing. They betrayed any friends they made for a petty comment about grades and most of them were lonely. None of them were lonelier than the girl who held the position of rank 1. Day in and day out, school was all she had and all she did. Once, in calculus, I was put in a group with her. This project involved us meeting outside of class, and when we met she told me it was the first time she has ever had a friend over. After finishing our project, she told me about how alone she felt and she didn’t understand why the other â€Å"smart kids† hated her. After a lengthy explanation, she didn’t really seem fazed by what I said. She accepted it as fact and said something to the effect of â€Å"I guess it doesn’t matter whether or not I make friends or go to parties. I’m still number 1 and I’ll always be better than them.† This mindset reinforces the initial saying; she reached the top and found out how lonely it truly was. Unlike the ranked 1 student, I took a different approach towards learning and still managed to place high in the rankings. Instead of focusing on getting the highest grade and besting others, I focused on doing my personal best and achieving whatever I deserved for my efforts. I spent my time breezing through high school, taking what I deemed interesting instead of what was recommended. Instead of pining for the results of taking honors courses, I spent my time enthralled by what each course had to offer. Even though I only got to rank 15, I had a wonderful time learning throughout high school. I was proud of my accomplishment unlike many of the other students in the top twenty. They constantly complained about how a certain teacher brought their GPA down or how certain non-honors electives only gave them a 4.0 instead of a 5.0. They became too obsessed with being number one that they did not take the time to enjoy their teenage years. To me, school became a colosseum where the top 40 students were gladiators competing for their lives. They all competed for a spot in the top 20 (who were given medals at graduation) and the strongest of them competed for the number one spot. These top students put on public spectacles just like the gladiators would. Instead of combat, students showed off to their audience through their use of leadership skills, extracurricular activities, and various school sanctioned events or competitions. The audience would consist of parents, teachers, colleges, and scholarship committees whose prizes and adoration motivated each student to try harder and strive for those limited top spots. In this instance, the classes ultimately became the beasts that the gladiators faced on the field. With every creature slain, another trophy or medal adorned the gladiator’s wall. With each class completed, another A was plastered on their transcripts. With each trophy, they became more and more popul ar among the audience. Every one of them dreaming of being their high school’s Spartacus. Victory may cause excitement and it may be something to strive towards, but it should not take over people’s lives. Although victory may bring a sense joy, it is not necessary to feel that happiness. The path taken, the people met, and the experiences had can bring an equal, if not greater amount of happiness. Regardless of results, people should learn to be proud of what they have already accomplished. I could have fumed at how I got second place for my painting and I could have easily pointed out all the flaws in the first place prizes work. However, I would rather not waste energy trying to bring someone down just to make myself feel better. I have enough confidence in my own abilities and accomplishments that bringing someone else down would not help me in any way. I have already attained that high of victory in just accomplishing the task and doing my best.

Avoid the HMRC backlash - Emphasis

Avoid the HMRC backlash Avoid the HMRC backlash You may recall that six million people have through no fault of their own paid the wrong amount of tax over the last few years, thanks to a blunder at HM Revenue Customs (HMRC). The story dominated the column inches last month, in part because of the way HMRC so unceremoniously delivered this bombshell to its customers (in the form of a standard tax calculation letter) and in part because of the backlash that followed from taxpayers. Being customer-centred Arguably some of the controversy could have been avoided through a large dose of subtlety and a more customer-centred approach from HMRC. And if it had actually taken into account how its customers might receive the news (particularly if you were one of the 1.4 million poor souls who had underpaid). HMRC was never going to make friends in this situation, but equally it didnt have to make enemies. The tone of its letter was on the clinical side at best and unapologetic at worst. Heres an extract to give you a flavour: Dear taxpayer [Name] I have reviewed your income tax liability for the year shown above to see whether you have underpaid or overpaid tax for that year. My calculation is given on the enclosed sheet. The calculation result is given near the foot of that page. The See Notes column refers to the numbered notes in the guidance leaflet Understanding your tax calculation which I also enclose. A copy of this calculation has been sent to [Agent name]. Part of this underpayment is already being collected through your tax code during [year] and the rest will be collected during [yearyear] (Source: BBC News) Keeping letter writing customer-centred is always important, but probably never more so than when giving bad news. The last thing you want is to exacerbate the situation by not only delivering a blow, but by also sounding like a robot as you do so. To avoid this, try the SCRAP (Situation, Complication, Resolution, Action, Politeness) formula. Situation Begin by explaining the situation (or where they [your readers] are). By doing this, your readers will realise you understand and empathise with them. In the case of HMRC, this could have involved briefly summing up (and owning up to) mistakes in the PAYE system, and suggesting it was at least aware of the worry this might cause to its customers. As you may be aware, HMRC has recently found that some taxpayers have paid the wrong amount of tax through the PAYE system over the last two years. We understand that many people will now be concerned about how this may affect them. Complication Introduce the idea that theres a problem readers need to solve or a request they need to fulfil (why they cant stay there). Here, of course, this will be the money taxpayers owe (or are due). It would also be wise to reinforce this with an apology. Im very sorry to tell you that you have been undercharged by X for the year XX, as the enclosed calculation shows. Resolution State your resolution to the problem or request. Your readers may well be relieved that youre offering a ready-made way of fixing things. (In the case of HMRC, such a sense of relief would unfortunately elude those taxpayers suddenly finding themselves seriously out of pocket.) We are now in the process of collecting underpayments. For those who have underpaid by less than 2000, like you, we will do this by altering your tax code to reclaim the money in monthly instalments over the next X year[s]. We would also like to assure you that from now on, we will be using a new computer system that will minimise the risk of such a mistake happening again. Action Suggest what action the reader can or should take. In some cases, this will be what further action you, the writer, are going to take. Make sure that this follows on logically from the resolution. HMRC has been criticised for not being entirely open about taxpayers possible rights to appeal. If these were made clear at this point, it might avoid being bombarded with letters of appeal sent on the off-chance. You dont need to do anything at this point: your new tax code will be applied automatically. The additional tax taken each month will be X. If, however, you feel that you provided all the necessary information for us to tax you correctly, you may be entitled to appeal. Please see the enclosed leaflet for details on whether this applies to you and how to contact us. Politeness Finally, end with a polite sign-off. And, in this example, a second apology. I hope you understand why we need to take this corrective action. Once again, Im sorry for the effect that our mistake may have on your financial situation. Yours sincerely [name] Apologise like a human No-one likes to admit theyve made a mistake, but owning up and apologising when its justified will always have a better reception from your reader than trying to wriggle out of it. And, while I apologise is better than nothing, Im sorry is much better: it sounds more sincere and more personal. The language of we apologise for any inconvenience caused has been dubbed professionalese by Daniel H Pink, author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Pink advises avoiding the phrase entirely, because it makes the author seem like theyre distancing themselves from the mistake. We speak human at home and professionalese at work, he explains. And that might be hurting our businesses more than we realise. In childhood were often told to say were sorry and mean it. And it seems that remains the best advice at every level. In his book The Upside of Irrationality, Dan Ariely found that a simple Im sorry, uttered following a mistake, stopped the other person from getting annoyed and retaliating in some way. Say, for example, refusing to pay back tax. Want to improve your teams customer-letter writing? See our in-house customer-letter writing course.

Trends changing how companies hire in 2018 and beyond -TheJobNetwork

Trends changing how companies hire in 2018 and beyond -TheJobNetwork The HR world has certainly changed over the past decade- after all, when was the last time you saw a resume or cover letter on thick, expensive paper that came via snail mail? (Or if it was recently, it was probably a rare sighting.) Like every other field, HR is susceptible to changes and trends. Some aren’t built to last (remember the video resume trend for a minute?), but others are geared toward making your job easier in the long term.Better interviews = better hiresIt’s possible that nothing will ever truly replace the good old â€Å"gut feeling† you get when you meet with a candidate. But as a rule, making the interview process more inclusive, less biased, and less time-consuming is a huge plus. Traditional interviews aren’t going anywhere, but they’re getting a bit of polishing this year and beyond. Having someone sit across from you and tell you what they know you want to hear isn’t always the most effective use of your hiring time. I f you’re looking to streamline or equalize the interview itself, there are HR software programs that essentially craft your interview script, standardizing interviews across a pool of candidates. (This has the added bonus of helping to eliminate personal bias or individual quirks if there are multiple interviewers.)Online skill assessments, designed to gauge a candidate’s soft skills, give you more data before a candidate ever walks through your doors in their best interview suit. Gaps and strengths are more apparent up front, allowing you to be more selective about who makes it to the next round, and bring in stronger candidates up front.â€Å"Job auditions† are also hot right now. These are less â€Å"tell me your five-year plan† interviews and more â€Å"show me how you’d do the job† interviews. This takes away some of the guesswork about how a candidate would likely perform the job. Nerves and novelty won’t always show you 100% of what a candidate’s potential is, but it gives you a chance to see how he or she thinks, whether the candidate can apply past experience and skills, etc.Prioritizing diversityDiversity is a priority in just about every industry right now, and for good reason. Lack of diversity is becoming a significant liability and can lead to issues with an ever-more-diverse public. Companies that don’t actively seek diversity in their hiring are likely to find themselves at a significant disadvantage as talent pools shrink. According to LinkedIn surveys, diversity is the top hiring trend for 78% of hiring managers.hbspt.cta.load(2785852, '9e52c197-5b5b-45e6-af34-d56403f973c5', {});Still, for all its trendiness, truly diverse hiring continues to be a challenge. Many companies are tackling this by branching out in their talent sourcing and using non-traditional recruitment methods (or venues) to find hot new talent.Bingeing on Big DataMetrics, metrics, metrics. With the increased use of hiring databases and HR software platforms capable of collecting information on employees from application to retirement, there’s no shortage of information that companies can use. The challenge here is using it in a smart, speedy way that allows for real-time employee engagement and development to help ensure that great hires stay great employees. According to LinkedIn’s annual global recruiting trends report, more than half of HR professionals say that employee retention is the most valuable use of employee data. The heart of this data trend is using the information to make hiring predictions, not just hiring decisions. HR departments are really starting to harness the power of this data by using increasingly sophisticated AI and automation platforms to create predictive models based on a candidate’s information, compared to information about past hires and current employees. The most important takeaway from this year’s hot trends in hiring is that com panies are moving toward a more efficient, better-rounded talent pool, with concrete data that can be offered up to support those gut decisions. This year, it’s all about streamlining and maximizing the resources we already have in place- not necessarily replacing them.

Workforce 2020 Executive Report - DHSOS Assignment

Workforce 2020 Executive Report - DHSOS - Assignment Example Future trends – forecast 6 3.1 Economic, social, demographic, and workforce parameters that are expected to be in the U.S. in the year 2020 6 3.2 What are the general trends in leadership/management that are impacting your organization? 7 4. Recommendations – changes needed for the future in order for the organization to meet the expected challenges of 2020 8 4.1 Leadership actions that the organization should take 8 4.2 Competencies that will be needed 9 4.3 What does the organization need to do to be prepared? 10 References 11 Summary The standardization of organizational performance in the long term is a challenging task. Firms that tend to perform high on annual basis may face periods of downturns; this phenomenon has been related to problems in the organization’s internal environment, especially in regard to the leadership style and the workforce structure. Managers in DHSOS, a medium-size firm of the US computer industry, face the following dilemma: should they try to support the firm’s existing leadership practices or they should promote major changes in regard to the firm’s leadership style and workforce structure? The first choice has been considered as rather risky; the second one, i.e. the emphasis on changes on the specific sectors has been chosen. The particular plan can secure, at higher level, the limitation of a series of organizational problems that would result to severe delays in the firm’s performance up to 2020. 1. Introduction The ability of an organization to survive in the modern market is depended on certain criteria. Issues, such as the organization’s leadership style, its workforce diversity but also the quality and the level of communication are critical for the long-term success of the organization in its industry. On the other hand, in high competitive industries, the challenges for organizations of all sizes can be significant, at least compared to less competitive industries. DHSOS is one of the most promising firms in the computer industry in USA. The firm focuses on the provision of IT consultancy services in large firms. The firm was first established in New York in March of 2009, i.e. about 3 years before. During this time, the firm has managed to develop its customer base at least by 80%, a fact that it is quite promising for the firm’s performance in the future. Currently, the firm’s employees are estimated to 540, across the firm’s branches in New York, Chicago and Illinois. Up to the end of 2011, the firm’s performance seemed to be continuously developed, with no sign of a potential downturn. However, during the first half of this year, the firm seems to be unable to control employee performance, which tends to change unexpectedly leading to important losses, as compared to the same period of last year. A careful review of the organization’s key trends, such as its structure, its leadership style and its workforce ch aracteristics leads to the assumption that a series of changes need to be made in regard to the particular organizational sectors. These changes are highlighted in this paper, which can be used, as a manual for the firm’s workforce needs by 2020. 2. DHSOS – Presentation and analysis of key organizational trends 2.1 Organizational structure Since its establishment, DHSOS has been a highly centralized organization. In fact, its leadership style can be characterized as autocratic. The leader of the organization sets the key criteria on which workforce structure and employee performance would be evaluated. Moreover, the promotion of team – work within the organization is rather limited. Tasks are assigned to individuals are need to be completed by them, usually without cooperation with other colleagues. This practice has resulted, in many cases, to

To Kill a Mockingbird: Jem Grows Up :: To Kill a Mockingbird Essays

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, has won many prestigious awards and is still a very classic and appreciated book in our society today. Jem, a character in the book, grows up and realizes that you have to step in someone else’s shoes to understand why they make the decisions that they make. Once Jem saw that the knot-hole in the tree was filled with cement he started crying because he stepped into Boo Radley’s shoes. Also, When Jem learned that Mrs. Dubose had died, he stepped into her shoes and then felt sorry for her.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One way that shows that Jem grows up and realizes that he has to step in someone else’s shoes to understand why they make the decisions that they make is when he discovers that Nathan Radley filled the knot-hole in the tree with cement. He told Jem that he filled the tree with cement due to the fact that the tree was dying, when it was obviously not. Boo was communicating with them by placing gifts in the knot-hole. Jem steps into Boo’s shoes at that point and figures out that all Boo was trying to do was communicate with the children, and putting gifts in the knot-hole was the only way he knew how to without getting a lot of attention from the public. Jem knows that if he were locked up in his own house for that long, he would try to communicate and have a little fun with children that he sees playing around in the neighborhood. That is why he cries; he knows that Boo is just trying to be nice and communicate with them, and he just doesn’t un derstand why Nathan Radley would cut that communication between his brother and the children   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Another way that shows that Jem grows up and realizes that he has to step in someone else’s shoes to understand why they make the decisions that they make is when he learned that Mrs. Dubose had died. When he was reading to Mrs. Dubose, he hated it, and he hated her for making him do it for so long. Once he learned that Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict, and that her fits were from it, he ate all of his bad comments about her. He stepped into her shoes and saw everything from her perspective. He knew that if he were in her position, he would have probably done the same thing.

Mr Gangsta

D1 Evaluate the team’s overall effectiveness in meeting its objectives, making recommendations for improvements In this assignment I will be talking about the overall effectiveness of my team which consists of me, Aman, Boris and Ansaar in meeting its objectives. I will be talking about what went well when constructing this team for a specific purpose and what didn’t go well. I will also be referring to Belbin’s, John Adair’s and Tuckman’s Theories. The second part of this assignment I will be giving recommendations for improvement of how team work in the future may be improved. In the P5 assignment I was given a task to produce a presentation which demonstrates team working as part of a team towards achieving specific goals. In the presentation the following points were included; the benefits of team working, theories of team working and theories of leadership. Each team member in the team was given a specific role to complete which lead to the task ultimately being completed.I was given the role to find information through research about Tuckman’s four stages of team development, Aman was allocated to a role where he had to produce slides for Belbin’s theory, Boris was given the role to produce slides about John Adair and finally Ansaar had the role to provide a few slides about the benefits of team working. This team was a temporary team as it was only formed to complete a task. Throughout the task each team member was motivated to contribute to the success of the task. Throughout the task the leadership was excellent as Boris the leader of this task allocated roles as soon as he becomes leader.Firstly we were supposed to choose the leader, Boris got the most votes for being the leader thus he had the responsibility to allocate us our roles immediately. Before producing our slides we were supposed to produce plans so that every person in the team knew what he was doing. The three steps were to; allocate roles i n the team, start slides and the leader (Boris) has to analyse the work, and finally fix the slides and check for any spelling mistakes included in those slides. After this process was over we were able to finalize the slides. During the task all 4 members of the team were able to interact with the audience very well. While presenting the presentation each team member in the team had good eye contact with the audience which suggested that we knew what we were talking about and were confident in what we were saying. We practiced this presentation several times which reflected in our manner we presented our presentation. No individual in the group red of smart board as we had memorized the sentences thus we could use gestures while presenting the presentation. Hand movements was a essential requirement while presenting the presentation as when describing something you must use your hands for the point to be delivered to the audience. This makes the audience intrigued in what you are say ing as they would want you to continue speaking. Furthermore, each member in the team was allocated with a very specific role which had to be completed before a deadline. Our team leader Borris who was a democratic leader as he encouraged each team member in the team to say what they wanted to so that those points can be brought up in the presentation. Boris gave us a specific date to complete the slides by so that any final areas can be checked for before presenting the presentation to the whole class. All 4 members in the team provided good communication skills as we were loud and clear at all occasions as the audience was able to hear what we were pointing out. Our group performed similar to the Tuckman’s 4 stages of Team development. This gave us a guideline and a way we could perform in the team. The four stages of Tuckman’s team development which are; forming, storming, norming and performing were carried out by our team as we created successful business plans whi ch led to the success of the task. Correction of spelling mistakes and grammar were made as no errors were to be found when we were conducting our presentation.Furthermore Boris had those 3 leadership skills which John Adair had during his time, those 3 leadership skills were; the achievement of goal or task, the group of people performing the task, each individual member involved in the task. Boris followed these 3 leadership skills which led to the performance of our team being very good. These 3 leadership skills rubbed off on all of the other members of the team as Boris led by example. When we were forming our teams which is the first stage of team development of Tuckman’s theory we had a slight problem. Both Ansaar and Warfa had equal rights to the team as they both participated equally. Neither one would oblige to go in another group as they had given equal contribution to the performance of the team. This is something which did not go well as no one was willing to move to some other team. Finally the problem was resolved as Warfa volunteered to make his own group consisting of himself, Aman and Boris. This situation lasted for a prolonged period of time as neither of these individuals wanted to move into a different team. There were several other problems during the P5 task for instance during the presentation my hands were in my pockets which limited my use of gestures during the presentation. Furthermore during the presentation I realised that we communicated well with each other however the slides we presented had too little information. Our overall performance was good however if there was more information on each slide then the overall performance would have improved even more. Moreover Ansaar mostly red of the slides and didn’t show much eye contact with the audience. He was a confident and loud speaker thus everyone was able to hear him however he kept reading of the smart board therefore the team’s overall performance decrease d slightly. Hands in pockets are a key sign of disrespect and shows that you cannot be bothered to present the presentation. On a few occasions I was caught with my hands in my pockets and I was unaware of that. I presented my part of slides well and presented myself well to the audience however the lack of movement of hands slightly decreased the credibility of my performance. There are several recommendations for improvement which can be applied on our team. The first being the point that I mentioned above; hands in my pockets. When I present some other type of business presentation next time I wish to use my hands more for gestures and ways which I can present my point to the class more efficiently. This will improve the credibility of my speech and will make the class more intrigued to listen to what I have to say. Furthermore I would like my team to conduct a presentation more efficiently next time. I want to conduct a presentation where every team member has memorized all the w ords on the slides so that individual doesn’t have to read of the slides.

NIKEs Labour Troubles Essay - 1414 Words

NIKEs Labour Troubles Nike publicizes itself as one of the leading industries in corporate responsibility. However, they do not comply with several human rights obligations overseas in countries like Thailand, Pakistan, China, Vietnam and Indonesia. In these countries, production facilities called sweatshops have been running for almost 35 years employing workers as young as 13 years of age. The conditions of these factories are adverse to say the least and deprive workers of the moral human rights they should be entitled to. Sweatshops are unethical, immoral and demonstrate Nike’s ignorance towards their social responsibilities abroad. Since Nike gained a tighter grip on their production facilities in Asia working conditions are starting to improve. In China, one factory provides living quarters and meal plans which are partially paid for by the company as well as a $73 US per month salary. Nike’s SHAPE (Safety, Health, Attitude of Management, People, Environment) Program is a program delegated exclusively to labour-practice enforcement.
